Photos from the Yangtzee River Cruise

There are *THREE* sets of photos here: the first along the Yangtzee River,
the second along the small river tributary, and the third at the Ghost City
of Fengdu. Our River Cruise started near Chengdu and disembarked near Wuhan.
We cruised for three nights, stopping each day.
We stopped at the Three Gorges Dam the first day, a small river tributary
the second day, and the Ghost City of Fengdu the third day.

Along the Yangtzee River

This is the sister ship to ours, they look exactly the same

Three Gorges Dam, entering the locks to pass the Dam

The rear side of the Dam

Looking back at the Dam, the haze is major

The backside of the dam, the red cargo/support towers

From the rear of the cruise ship, entering the Middle Gorge

The *fast* method of river transport, a hydrofoil ship

The views along the river are worth the entire trip!

Another great view with the morning haze

Another view

Entering the third Gorge, hence the name Three Gorges Dam

Housing, moved up the side of the banks
before the Dam flooded downstream

Entering the small tributary. This used to be a major white-water rafting area, now it is under 175 meters of water.

A small house boat on the tributary, the Han River

This bridge used to be 175 meters above water.
They blew it up the Saturday after we were there, building a new one nearby.

These are family graves along the river, moved up the bank

These are the famous "hanging coffins".
While the method of placing them is unknown, they were
incredibly high at the time placed, 100's of years ago.
They are now not much above water level.

The government placed the signs, so people could move
their houses far enough above flood level.
Many carried the top soil up also, since the soil is poor.
They grow fruit and vegetables mostly in this area.

A floating out-house at the mouth of a smaller tributary we took by sampan.
I don't know where the wastes go from the building...

The Ghost City of Fengdu. The city was moved from lower elevation to it's
present location, high above water level. It is a city of the "dead",
reprensentations of the local spirit gods. People would come to pray for passed
loved ones, praying they were in the "nice" place, not the City of the Damned.

The gate at teh base of the walk and tram to the City of Fengdu

A view along the shopping walk before the tram to the top.
Best deals of the trip were right here!

Inside the city, some of the great architecture

Jumping over the Bridge of Harmony.
If one does it right, your marriage will survive all matter.
Supposedly.

One of the gods on the walk to the entrance of the city

Wonder who the god will strike?

The walls are painted with a chalk like substance; it runs in the rain.

Five of the ten gods of the Underworld

The other five gods of the Underworld. They were all pretty vicious looking...

An entry to a central courtyard

The tram you ride to get to the top of the hill the city sits on now

In front of Chang Kai Chek's meeting hall. The top layers let in light and air.

A wonderful final parting shot. These musicians were also
the stewards, waiters, entertainers, and greeting and
departing band members on the river cruise.
They did it all, and did it well.
